AVP/Senior Tax Accountant

Primary duties/responsibilities

~~• Responsible for independently preparing/reviewing complex federal income tax returns and related workpapers including M-1/M-3 tax adjustment schedules for insurance and non-insurance companies.
• Responsible for review of state premium and municipal tax returns
• Responsible for timely preparation/review of quarterly federal and state estimated tax payment calculations along with extensions and related filings; as well as, ensuring timely request/processing of payments.
• Responsible for preparation of GAAP (FAS No.109), including FIN 48, and Statutory (SSAP #101) income tax provisions and supporting documentation for US and UK.  This includes the calculation and review of deferred tax inventory items.
• Responsible for maintenance and reconciliation of consolidated current and deferred tax balance sheet accounts on quarterly/annual basis.
• Responsible for preparation of annual current provision to tax return true-up calculation and intercompany cash settlements.
• Responsible for preparation of tax provision and related financial statement (consolidated and standalone) disclosures in connection with GAAP and Statutory financial statement audits for US and UK.
• Assist with/handle responses to IRS/State/City audit inquiries.
• Assist in Sarbanes-Oxley documentation of tax process and procedures.
• Perform tax research and preparation of tax memorandums.
• Assist with various tax consulting, process improvement and other projects as assigned by Management.
• Keep up-to-date on latest developments and assist with implementation as they affect tax regulations and policies.
• Clearly communicate recommendations verbally and in writing.

Specific skills, competencies, resources and/or software/technology used on the job

~~• Have strong interpersonal skills and excellent communication skills (both verbal and written), including ability to simplify and communicate complex business information.
• Exposure to Federal, State and multi-State income taxation compliance.  Audit or consulting experience a plus.
• Some insurance tax experience is preferred but is not required.
• Good foundation of GAAP (FAS 109) and Statutory (SSAP #101) tax provision experience is a plus.
• Solid PC skills, including Microsoft Windows, Office applications and tax preparation software (FAST-Tax/Go-systems). PeopleSoft skills a plus.
• Advanced Excel skills are required.
• Be a highly-motivated self-starter successful in a "Team" oriented setting.
• Be able to lead and train/develop junior staff.
• Be able to quickly process information and master complex concepts.
• Possess a solid understanding of accounting theory, tax and accounting practices.
• Have exceptional organizational skills with excellent attention to detail.
• Be able to work under pressure, multi-task, be flexible and meet deadlines

Education, certifications and/or experience requirements

~~• 3 to 5 years of tax experience in public accounting or corporate tax department.
• Bachelor’s degree in accounting.  CPA or graduate degree preferred.
